Migration can work as a Safety Valve for Brazil post Pandemic

Map of Brazil with divisions of states and regions

Brazil has the second highest death after USA in COVID 19 as of October second week. This has resulted in unprecedented challenge for Brazil. Though Brazil has one of the better healthcare systems in South America, its healthcare management did not respond well to the rural areas. Quoting the Maple croft’s report Business insider says that “Corrupt, ineffective and unstable governments limit its capacity to recover faster”.

Brazil which has been both sending and receiving countries for migration, will halt with flow for sometime due to the various restrictions of movement of people both internally and internationally. Brazil which ranked as the second main destination of tourism in South America in 2018 and its one of the main revenues comes from Tourism will not contribute anything to the revival of the economy.

With the increasing restriction of USA during COVID 19 and which may last afterwards too due to the various domestic economic and political compulsion, Brazil will be facing more challenge to provide decent employment to many of its citizens. The report of the Migration Policy Institute mentioned that “Approximately 450,000 Brazilian immigrants resided in the United States in 2017, an increase of nearly one-third over a seven-year span that was marked by difficult conditions in Brazil, including a recession accompanied by high unemployment and inflation”. There is a need for creating better employment for the high skilled and semi-skilled workers in order to make the economy to come to the track. However, migration can play a safety valve during this crisis by providing employment to the large section of people be it internal and international.
